Brooklyn Folk Festival

April 17, 2015 @ 8:00 am - April 19, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

The annual Brooklyn Folk Festival is coming up this April. The event promises to provide three straight days of folk tunes and music-related events. Featuring more than 30 bands from across the spectrum of modern and classic folk, the festival will also host musical workshops, square dancing, swing dancing, film screenings and a whole lot more. Located in Brooklyn Heights’ St. Ann & The Holy Trinity church, the festival draws musicians and fans from the five boroughs and beyond.

The three-day schedule of events and concerts will feature a slew of beloved musical acts. On Friday, April 17, Jackson Lynch will kick things off with his old school fiddle and blues guitar breakdowns. The evening’s sets will close with jazz and ragtime group Terry Waldo’s Rum House Band and an eclectic blues, folk and gospel act known as Feral Foster and His Band.

Saturday will be filled with folk performances, stretching from the early afternoon through dusk. The Brotherhood of the Jug Band Blues is one of the most anticipated Saturday acts. The festival will close on Sunday with old school jug band the Whiskey Spitters playing alongside several other highly touted acts.

Interspersed throughout the weekend’s various performances will be an array of events for folk fans of all ages to enjoy. Saturday will feature Folk City!, an exciting lesson on the history of folk music in the Big Apple from the well-versed Stephen Petrus of the Museum of the City of New York. Following the lesson, patrons can take part in an exciting vocal harmony workshop. On Sunday the festival will hold their famous banjo-throwing competition, from which one lucky contestant will take home a free banjo.

With a feeling of community fueling the weekend-long Brooklyn Folk Festival, there are plenty of reasons to head out and enjoy the festivities. Be sure to visit to Brooklyn Heights this April to take part in all of the fun events and listen to some classic American music.
