Celebrate Brooklyn! is an expansive and eclectic free outdoor performing arts festival that is one of the borough’s favorite summertime traditions. Dating back to 1979, the festival has attracted thousands of artists to the Prospect Park Bandshell annually while offering an array of different programs. From live music to film to dance, Celebrate Brooklyn! is both a testament to the broad and passionate art culture throughout Brooklyn and an accessible platform for locals and visitors of all backgrounds to enjoy a show.
At the forefront of this year’s programs, Celebrate Brooklyn! has already scheduled a string of impressive artists to take the stage in Prospect Park this summer. The opening act on June 3rd will be none other than the vivacious and soulful Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan. The rest of this year’s lineup features several major names in the world of music, some of which include: Interpol, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Willie Nelson, and Modest Mouse.
As if all of these outstanding acts aren’t producing enough sounds to dance to, Celebrate Brooklyn will also throw a round of Brooklyn Bridge Dance Parties this spring. Bringing the beats of renowned DJ’s to the Brooklyn Bridge this May, dance party attendees will be able to boogie down with an undeniably phenomenal backdrop.
In addition to the concerts and dance parties, Celebrate Brooklyn! will bring an exquisite variety of other performance arts to Prospect Park. The Live Music for Film program features renowned bands and ensembles performing live scores to silent short films. The Spoken Word and Theater programs feature an array of one man shows and broadway level stage productions. Additionally, the Dance program brings several world-famous dance companies to the bandshell each year.
This widespread festival promises one extraordinary thing for people who will spend time in Brooklyn this summer. There will almost always be something going on that is fun, interesting, and absolutely free.
