Every year, leading poets and literary enthusiasts from around the world converge by the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan for a poetry-filled evening that’s become one of the city’s most beloved events. Walking across the bridge into Brooklyn, participants listen to poetry readings along the way before a dinner (complete with more poetry, of course). This unique and romantic event is put on by the Poets House as a fundraiser for its yearly lineup of free and affordable public offerings.
This year’s roster of poets reading and walking represents a who’s who of contemporary poetry: Best-selling poet and MacArthur fellow Edward Hirsch will join Brooklyn Poet Laureate Tina Chang, along with acclaimed poets Richard Blanco, Cornelius Eady, Laura Kasischke, Thomas Lux, and Ocean Vuong. Actor Bill Murray will also participate in the readings as a special guest after several years of taking part in the walk.
The Poets House is a poetry library in Manhattan that carries upwards of 60,000 volumes of work ranging from the historical and to the avant-garde contemporary. One of the country’s most extensive collections of poetry open to the public, its Battery Park City headquarters are a must-see for many locals and visitors alike. Beyond a free and open home base, the Poets House also hosts a great number of readings, workshops, exhibitions and children’s events throughout the year. A destination for all poetry lovers, the Poets House is an extraordinary New York institution.
Whether your interest is supporting this marvelous foundation or indulging in the fantastical words and voices of the literary figures set to attend, this year’s Poetry Walk is one of New York City’s can’t-miss events. Indulge in this magical experience and learn more about the Poets House and their various ventures here.
