Photography and Letter Writing in Civil War Brooklyn
American history buffs, rejoice. On display in the Brooklyn Historical Society’s exhibition space is a rare and fascinating exhibit that sheds light on life in Civil War Brooklyn. A collection of letters sent home by Brooklyn soldiers fighting in the war give insight into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Photographs allow the viewer to imagine what life was like in Brooklyn during this time. While the photographs and letters on display are informative, almost as telling is the absence of particular voices, voices that weren’t deemed important enough to be recorded.
