Spend this Fourth of July in Brooklyn! There are a plethora of events to take advantage of and this year the Fourth falls on a Friday, which practically guarantees the celebration continues through the weekend.
On Coney Island, Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest draws thousands of visitors, while the evening brings the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display, easily the most spectacular fireworks in the country. This year’s fireworks display takes place on the East River, meaning that you can take in the exciting display from Brooklyn or Manhattan. For the best spots to view Fourth of July fireworks in Brooklyn we recommend:
Brooklyn Bridge Park Main St. (at Fulton Ferry Landing)
In the neighborhood affectionately known as “DUMBO,”(Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), this 85-acre park has a carousel and riverside esplanades with prime views of Manhattan and unobstructed views of the river (we’re obsessed).
Brooklyn Heights and Brooklyn Promenade
Columbia Heights, (between Middagh and Montague Sts)
This esplanade has “postcard-ready views of lower Manhattan,” as TONY describes them, and also offers clear views of the river.
South Street Seaport
19 Fulton St., at Front St.
This Manhattan neighborhood, located just on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, attracts locals and tourists alike, and offers numerous outdoor concerts throughout the summer. The South Street Seaport offers clear views of the river, making it an ideal spot for firework viewing.
No Fourth of July celebration is complete without a picnic basket brimming with treats. For a Southern take on the picnic, check out Seersucker (329 Smith Street)—their fried chicken is out of this world. For more variety in your picnic provisions stop by Forager’s City Grocer (56 Adams St) a specialty food shop in DUMBO.
