Times Square may lay claim to the highest concentration of action and energy leading up to the dropping of the ball on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, however, an entirely different sort of celebration takes place on the typically freezing cold Coney Island Boardwalk. The Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the oldest winter bathing organization in the country holds an annual swim in near-freezing water.
Dozens of courageous and cryotherapy-obsessed individuals run into the Atlantic Ocean for a quick “plunge” to start the New Year off “right?” The dip takes place at 1 pm sharp. And since it only lasts for about a minute, it’s recommended that you arrive early.
