People who don’t cycle usually assume one must be either brave or have a death wish to cruise the streets of New York City on two wheels. While avid cyclists will tell you cycling through the city is not all that bad and improving every day, most of them will also say they prefer cycling in Brooklyn. It’s flat. The streets are wider. And the traffic is far less daunting.
Introducing NU Hotel’s Cruisers
Guests to Brooklyn who want to explore the borough by bike have several options. Bikes can be rented traditionally at shops or through websites like Spinlister.com. If you stay at NU Hotel, however, you can borrow a Brooklyn Cruiser. The local Brooklyn bicycle manufacturer has produced a special line of cruisers just for our guests to use. The comfortable, well-maintained bikes fit right in in Brooklyn. Leather trim and cream tires give the bikes a vintage feel, while spacious wooden baskets complete the hipster aesthetic. They also make it easy to transport essentials you’ll need while out exploring and any produce or souvenirs you pick up while out.
NU Hotel Cruiser v. Other Bike Rental Options.
Renting a bike in New York City is not cheap. Even Citi Bike’s 24-hour rental program costs $10, and requires a $101 deposit. Unlike with Citi Bike rentals, NU Hotel Cruisers don’t have to be locked into a new docking station every 30 minutes. If you wanted to, you could ride the entire day without switching bikes. NU Hotel’s Brooklyn Cruisers are free for hotel guests to use during their stay.
Where to Cycle
Brooklyn has more than 300 miles of designated bike lanes, bike paths, and greenways. Many of the best paths can be reached from NU Hotel within minutes. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Greenway offers exceptional views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Cycling across the Brooklyn Bridge can be chaotic, but is another fun nearby option. If you’re up for a long ride, cycle the 9 miles from Carroll Gardens to Coney Island. Much of the entirely flat ride is spent on Ocean Parkway, the United States’ first bike path. You can always return with your bike via subway if you don’t have the energy to cycle back.
There’s a lot to gain from exploring Brooklyn by bike. If you decide to use one of our cruisers or another bike during your stay, we encourage you to use a helmet, ride safely, and have fun. Learn more about NU Hotel’s cruiser loans on our blog.
