Spring in Brooklyn: Must-Do Outdoor Activities

Spring shows up in Brooklyn all at once. One day you’re still wearing a winter coat, the next day people are picnicking in the park and lining up for ice cream on the boardwalk.

Sidewalk tables reappear. Farmers’ markets open back up. Green spaces like Prospect Park and McCarren Park are filled with bikes, dogs, blankets, and groups of friends catching up after months of hibernation.

If you’re staying at NU Hotel, you’re in the perfect spot to take advantage of it. Many of Brooklyn’s best outdoor experiences are just a short walk, bike ride, or subway stop away. Here are a few spring traditions locals look forward to every year.

Cherry Blossom Season at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

When the cherry blossoms bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, people from all over the city come to see them shine. The Cherry Esplanade fills with soft pink petals and shaded walkways that feel almost unreal after a long winter. Late April and early May are usually peak bloom, and the garden celebrates with special programming and the popular ‘Weekends in Bloom’ gatherings.

Special happenings aside, the garden alone is worth your time. Wander the paths, sit by the pond, and take in the first real signs of spring.

Picnic or Bike Through Prospect Park

Brooklyn locals have a deep love for Prospect Park, and spring is when it really comes alive. After strolling through the botanical garden, Brooklyn Museum or Public Library, head out into the greens and watch Long Meadow fill with picnic blankets and games of frisbee, or fawn over precious new additions to the Prospect Park Zoo family.

The park’s three-mile loop is popular with cyclists and runners looking to shed some winter layers. Around the lake, you can sit on benches with a drink from The Picnic House while kids chase ducks along the water. There’s even a dog beach for pups to dunk their toes!

It’s one of those places where you can easily spend an entire day getting lost, winding and weaving for miles without ever growing bored.

Eat Your Way Through Smorgasburg

Weekend plans in Brooklyn often start with one question: Should we go to Smorgasburg?

Smorgasburg is one of the city’s best outdoor food markets, bringing together dozens of vendors serving everything from dumplings and tacos to inventive, Instagram-worthy desserts. Open on Saturdays in Williamsburg and Sundays in Prospect Park, it’s where local food connoisseurs come to satisfy their every craving.

Grab something that piques your interest, find a seat near the water, and share bites with whoever you came with. It’s casual, social, and a great way to try a lot of different cuisines from all over the world in one afternoon.

Treasure Hunting at Brooklyn Flea

Right alongside food markets, spring also means the return of the Brooklyn Flea.

Down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass (or more commonly known as DUMBO), you’ll find vintage clothing, antique furniture, handmade jewelry, old records, and the kind of unexpected objects that make browsing half the fun.

Even if you’re not shopping for anything specific, it’s a good excuse to spend a slow morning wandering through stalls and chatting with vendors. On a not-so-sunny day, Artists & Fleas or Industry City are two great indoor options that feature tons of local selectors and vendors all year round.

Waterfront Walks at Brooklyn Bridge Park and Domino Park

Spring in Brooklyn is full of simple pleasures, like sunset strolls along the riverwalk.

At Brooklyn Bridge Park, grassy piers stretch along the East River offering clear views of the Manhattan skyline. You’ll find joggers, families, and people simply sitting on benches watching the boats go by. In the warmer months of spring and summer, the park’s roller rink opens up, adding music and a lively crowd to the scene.

Further north in Williamsburg, Domino Park sits on the site of the former Domino Sugar Factory. The restored industrial buildings give the park a unique look, and the long waterfront path is perfect for a stroll at sunset, just before snacks and cocktails at a nearby rooftop bar.

A Classic Day at Coney Island

Spring is a great time to visit Coney Island before the peak summer crowds arrive. Walk the boardwalk, ride the historic Cyclone roller coaster, or grab a hot dog from Nathan’s Famous and sit by the beach.

There’s something nostalgic about the whole experience; the rides, the ocean air, the old-school amusement park atmosphere. It all feels like right out of a classic movie and you’re the famous star.

Explore Street Art in Bushwick

Brooklyn’s art scene isn’t limited to museums. In Bushwick, entire blocks are covered in murals thanks to the Bushwick Collective. Artists from around the world have contributed to what’s now one of the city’s best outdoor art spaces for admiring visual art at its most poignant.

If you’re in Brooklyn during the end of May, keep an eye out for their annual block party combining graffiti, street art, food trucks, local DJs, and tons of great creatives coming together. If not, grab a coffee from La Cabra Roastery, walk around the neighborhood, and see what artworks really speak to you.

More Spring Events to Check Out

Beyond the parks and famous attractions, these are the seasonal events worth adding to your Brooklyn itinerary.

The Kite Festival at Brooklyn Bridge Park returns on May 16th, filling the waterfront sky with hundreds of colorful kites. Bring your crew and enjoy live music, crafts, games, and well, feeling like a kid again.

Spring is also the best time for farmers’ markets as seasonal produce is once again in abundance. The Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket is GrowNYC’s flagship Brooklyn market, and the second largest in NYC. Dozens of farmers, butchers, and artisans from all over the region gather here to showcase their bounties: organic eggs, local honey, exotic mushrooms and more.

Music lovers should also keep an eye out for spring performances around the borough. Bargemusic will once again host its chamber music concerts at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse in 2026, and admission is free. The Boathouse at Pier 5 is a beautiful spot for a concert, with floor-to-ceiling views of the river and Lower Manhattan and a warm, wood-paneled interior that’s perfect for chamber music.

For larger performances, head to the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park, home to outdoor concerts and cultural events like the annual BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! featuring major artists like this year’s headliner, Royel Otis. Down by the beach, the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island also kicks off its seasonal programming with concerts and live performances right along the boardwalk.

Between the markets, music, and community events, spring weekends in Brooklyn tend to fill themselves.
