For a segment of the population, podcasts have replaced visual and print media as a primary source of news and entertainment. If you’re into this modern form of talk radio, and you’ve got a trip to NYC coming up, get excited. Live tapings take place in the city every day at venues like the renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) theatres.

BAM Community Podcast

Since we’re discussing podcasts and BAM, we should probably mention the BAM Community podcast. The show’s niche audience is made up of listeners who are passionate about music and music education, but some of the episodes have broader appeal. From conversations on Philip Glass to the power of learning through music, there’s sure to be something there for music lovers everywhere.

RadioLoveFest BAM

A new annual celebration of the podcast radio show form, RadioLoveFest is a weeklong event during which several podcasts are taped for broadcast in front of live audiences at BAM. In 2015, Death, Sex, and Money; Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me; and Radiolab were among the hit podcasts recorded at the festival. Keep your eyes peeled for details about the event in May 2016. If you’re a big fan of some New York based podcasts, you may consider planning a return trip to coincide with RadioLoveFest.

Podcast Tapings Around Brooklyn

BAM’s acoustics and the special events nature of its live tapings makes it a great place to get your podcast fan game on. In the event no podcasts of interest to you are taped at BAM during your stay in Brooklyn, there are other venues nearby where you can catch a show. NPR’s hit entertainment podcast Ask Me Another is recorded live at The Bell House in Gowanus, a popular podcast taping venue that has hosted Radiotopia’s The Heart and WBUR’s You’re the Expert. The paranormal comedy show Welcome to Nightvale, while filmed more often at El Museo de Barrio in Manhattan these days, is a product of Brooklyn and occasionally records here as well.
Podcast tapings are just one of several rich cultural experiences you can have during your time in New York. Peruse the NU Hotel Brooklyn blog for additional inspiration while planning your upcoming trip.
