Brooklyn Steel is a relatively new music venue in Brooklyn that’s already become home to many of the city’s most sought after concerts. Located just a fifteen-minute subway ride from Nu Hotel, Brooklyn Steel gives travelers many reasons to check it out.
In April, popular New York rock band LCD Soundsystem opened Brooklyn’s hottest new concert venue with a five-show run that sold out in just minutes. In June, James Murphy’s band played another seven shows at Brooklyn Steel. In December, they’ll play an additional ten.
Other sold-out acts on the concert hall’s docket include: The Decemberists, PJ Harvey, and Two Door Cinema Club. The venue, opened and managed by The Bowery Presents, generated considerable buzz before it opened and has continued to since. Here’s a closer look at the history, design, and acoustics of Brooklyn Steel.
Brooklyn Steel: From Steel Manufacturing Plant to Concert Hall
The Bowery Presents founders knew almost immediately upon setting foot inside an old steel manufacturing plant in industrial north Brooklyn that they wanted it to house their next New York concert venue. Naming the venue was not hard. Steel from the original plant was repurposed for use throughout the facility’s interior, which retains a distinctly industrial feel. The roof better resembles a park than an old warehouse space. It’s covered in lush plants, intended to serve as a sound buffer between Brooklyn Steel and neighboring structures.
Stage, Capacity, Acoustics, and More
Brooklyn Steel is stylish in a trendy way that has pleased critics and concertgoers alike. But what really distinguishes the concert hall from other venues are its movable stage, flexible capacity, and stellar sound. The stage can be set up in three positions, providing the venue with respective capacities of 1,200, 1,500, and 1,800. The venue’s sound and acoustics are first-rate.
